Our commitment and goals

In 2021, as part of our Plan for Change, we set out our ambition for protecting and restoring nature.

2023

By 2023 launch our nature positive programme in order to scale innovative nature-based solutions

2025

By 2025 have regenerative agriculture initiatives in each of our priority supply chains to promote soil health, water management and biodiversity

2023

By the end of 2025 soy used in our ingredients and in the animal feed in our supply chain will be deforestation-free*

2030

By 2030 the global McDonald's business will have eliminated deforestation from our supply chains

We will be guided by science in order to protect and restore natural resources, and help regenerate biodiversity through projects across our value chain.

Our nature programme, formalised in 2023, takes an holistic approach to restoring nature to help improve the resilience of ecosystems and cut carbon emissions.

We will continue to collaborate on new innovations and agricultural best practice so the transformation can be accelerated across our supply chain. We aim to champion sustainable practices and harness innovation, focusing on regenerative agriculture in our priority supply chains.

The goal of regenerative food systems is to work with nature to increase biodiversity, enrich soils and optimise water availability. These restorative practices will help enhance ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, while improving productivity, nutrient cycling and climate resilience.

We are also committed to deforestation-free global supply chains by 2030 – forests play a vital role in creating oxygen and absorbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their conservation has a direct impact on the protection against climate change.

Developing regenerative agriculture

We are developing regenerative agriculture initiatives in each of our priority supply chains, including beef, potatoes and dairy, through our Farm Forward programme.

Our commitment to the UK Soy Manifesto

As a founding signatory of the UK Soy Manifesto, we are engaging with suppliers on a new approach to soy, working across our supply chain to increase transparency and promote collaboration.

Conserving forests

McDonald’s is committed to eliminating deforestation from our global supply chains by 2030. Supporting deforestation-free supply chains and promoting forests as a climate solution is not just our responsibility, it’s core to our business. Supporting regenerative grazing

In 2023, we launched a project involving 11 beef farms, covering approximately 7,500 acres and over 3,500 cattle in England and Wales, to share best practices in regenerative grazing, building on our AMP Grazing Project with FAI. This project will measure the impact of applying regenerative principles on nature, soil, biodiversity, water, carbon sequestration and climate resilience.

Over half a million trees planted on farms supplying our free-range eggs

Since 2012, the farmers supplying us with free-range eggs have planted a minimum of 20% tree cover on their ranges, through our range enrichment programme. This has benefited hen welfare and egg quality, and improved natural habitats.

Action on Climate

Our approach to the environment doesn’t stop with our commitments on nature. Our Plan for Change also includes our focus on climate, with goals to reach net zero emissions by 2040.
