To help parents get the most from our limited-edition McDonald’s Happy Meal box, Felicity Bennett, Programmes & Partnerships Manager at BBC Children in Need, has shared her three top tips:
Modelling behaviour: Time can be in short supply, but any time that you spend really connected with your children can strengthen your relationship. Make time as a family to enjoy artistic activities and use this quality time to show children that it's okay to express their feelings openly.
Open-ended prompts encourage creativity: Inspire children to open up by using emotive prompts that will encourage them to explore how they are feeling, without being limited by specific instructions. You can start a conversation with a simple question like “what made you smile today?”
Active listening and conversation: Taking time to discuss each other’s artwork as a family demonstrates that you value their feelings and are interested in understanding more about them. Try to tune into them in these moments, they’re great opportunities to connect and make children feel valued, seen and heard.
