About
Before McDonald’s
I’d been largely involved in construction, taking Commercial Director roles in major building firms – so nothing to do with retail or hospitality! My last role allowed me to travel the world, but it kept me away from my family for prolonged periods.
My connection with McDonald’s
I’m originally from London, but moved up to a rural area in the North West for my career prior to becoming a Franchisee. I actually approached McDonald’s with a view to becoming a Franchisee in that area in 2010.
What inspired me to become a McDonald’s Franchisee
I started thinking of my own legacy, planning my own business to leave behind for my family to build upon. When I spoke to McDonald’s, I was blown away by the passion of the people who worked and franchised for them.
Top insight
Working a week in a restaurant was so difficult, and you feel like you’re getting in the way of all the great young people that are the lifeblood of so many McDonald’s restaurants all over the UK. I really admired how good our managers are – they’re able to handle the most demanding and unexpected of problems. I can’t praise mine enough. They’re so inspiring.
My growth
My proudest moment was getting an MBE title for Services to the City of Coventry. The city has really welcomed me with open arms, and the crew within restaurants I handle did an unbelievable job working alongside a local charity in supporting the city’s homeless and vulnerable population and disadvantaged young people. I never set out to do anything like that when I became a Franchisee, but to help so many people who needed support, guidance and development – effectively changing their lives and building careers – makes going to work every day such a joy.
