PRODUCTS: Responsible Purchasing - Socially Responsible Supply Initiative
McDonald’s has a long-standing commitment to promoting socially responsible practices in our food supply chain. Our stringent food safety standards, animal welfare guidelines, supplier social accountability program, rainforest policy, and antibiotics policy all exemplify this commitment.

In 2003, we adopted a more comprehensive, strategic approach. The ultimate goal is to ensure a continuous supply of high-quality, safe products while creating net social, economic, and environmental benefits.

The strategy is based on a socially responsible supply vision and related principles. It also includes guidelines to provide us and our suppliers with a common framework for understanding the components of socially responsible production.

Within this framework, we are working toward more specific social responsibility guidelines and performance measures for our suppliers worldwide. As with our existing animal welfare and supplier social accountability programs, these are designed to encourage continuous improvement.

We have initiated several new programs to complement those already in place. They include a program to support sustainable fisheries, an environmental scorecard for direct suppliers of land-based agricultural products, and a collaboration to conserve the Amazon rainforest.

For an overview of our approach to sustainability issues, read our Vice President for Corporate Social Responsibility's blog entry on our journey toward sustainability. And take a look at his follow-up on how we're applying our principles to help improve conditions for Florida tomato workers.
